David Drummond’s covers

Here are some great book covers from canadian designer David Drummond. I’ve found his blog at Blogger, and also his cover slide show at Design Archives.

The Silver Palace Restaurant

This is a recent poetry book cover. The cover has matte lamination with a spot gloss varnish on the melting butter. The image of melting butter in a frying pan seemed an appropriate visual metaphor for this collection of poetry, which deals with the transience of time and human mortality. The Rent Collector

The cover immediately evokes the title character with a single, yet personalityfilled, object. The neutral type choice doesn’t detract focus from the wallet—a good thing. This is an example of a cover that met with a fair degree of initial resistance and probably would have been rejected if not for the support of the publisher.
